Gail’s Christmas Range: Filming Under Pressure on a Live Food Shoot

In November I was commissioned to produce video content for Gail’s Christmas food range, working alongside a large stills production at Stepney Townhouse in London. The brief was straightforward on paper: capture high-end moving image to complement the photography campaign once each setup was prepared.

In practice, the day unfolded more like a live production environment. A full stills team arrived with multiple props, stylists, and art direction running simultaneously across the space. Video became a fast-moving layer threaded between setups, with limited windows to capture motion before the next photographic arrangement took over.

 
 

Working with a single agency assistant acting as on-camera hands where needed, I built short narrative moments around each food scene as it became available. The approach prioritised immediacy and flexibility, reacting to what was ready rather than following a fixed shot list. In this kind of schedule, clarity of framing and speed of execution matter more than elaborate staging.

To protect quality across the required delivery formats, I shot the entire project in 6K RAW on the Canon C400, composing with multiple aspect ratios in mind from the outset. Each scene was framed to allow clean extraction for 16:9, 4:5, 1:1, and 9:16, ensuring social and campaign edits retained resolution and visual consistency despite the compressed shooting windows.

 
 

The final films balance product clarity with small gestures of movement and interaction, designed to sit naturally alongside the still campaign while bringing a sense of life to the food and table settings. Working inside a dense stills schedule meant prioritising decisive coverage and adaptable camera positioning, allowing video to integrate without disrupting the wider production flow.

Projects like this underline an important part of commercial videography that often sits behind the finished images: the ability to operate efficiently inside shared productions, maintain visual standards under time pressure, and deliver across multiple formats from a single capture strategy.
