Frequently Asked Questions – Working With William Scothern

Whether you’re planning a brand film, architectural shoot, or corporate video, it's natural to have questions. Here are some of the most common queries I get as a freelance filmmaker and shooting director working across the UK. If your question isn’t covered below, feel free to get in touch.

What type of video content do you produce?

I create short documentaries and brand films, often within architecture, design and cultural projects. I also apply the same observational approach across areas such as food, clean technology and corporate storytelling. Formats include interviews, spatial and material-led visuals, and narrative edits designed for web, film and social platforms.

What kind of equipment do you use?

I shoot on a Canon C400 and C80, with additional support from the R5C and DJI Pocket 3 when needed. My kit includes a gimbal, drone, multi-cam setups, and professional lighting and audio gear. This allows me to scale from intimate, one-on-one interviews to multi-location brand shoots—always with a focus on cinematic quality. Anything I don’t have can be rented in, if the production requires specific equipment.

Do you work solo or with a team?

Most of my projects are run lean—with myself as shooting director and editor—but I regularly collaborate with trusted second operators, drone pilots, and sound recordists depending on the scope. It’s a flexible setup that keeps things agile without compromising quality.

Can you film in live or public environments?

Yes. I’m experienced in filming in high-footfall and sensitive locations—from museum conservation studios to public architecture shoots—often with lightweight setups that minimise disruption while still capturing dynamic footage.

Do you edit the footage yourself?

Yes — I handle the edit, grading, and delivery in-house. That ensures creative consistency from shoot to final cut, and means quicker turnaround times.

How long does a typical project take?

Turnaround varies by complexity, but for event films or short brand stories, I often deliver within 3–5 working days. I can also accommodate tighter deadlines when needed. Everything can work, we’d just need to work out deliverables and expectations prior to a shoot.

Do you travel for shoots?

Absolutely. I’m based in London but regularly travel across the UK and Europe for shoots — especially for architecture and design-focused projects.

What’s included in your video packages?

I typically include pre-production planning, shooting, editing, music licensing, and two rounds of feedback. Every brief is different, so I’m happy to tailor based on the project’s needs.

What’s the difference between a videographer and a filmmaker?

A videographer often refers to someone who captures events or live footage, usually solo and with minimal crew. A filmmaker typically brings a more narrative or editorial approach — planning, directing, and editing stories with intent. I sit somewhere in between: working lean like a videographer, but shaping each project like a filmmaker.

Can you adapt to our brand style or tone?

Absolutely. Whether it’s a brand refresh or strict visual guidelines, I shape my approach to match your voice and audience. I’ve worked with clients ranging from The Modern House to Hackajob and the V&A—each requiring a unique visual tone and sometimes? Creating one for them.
